Volvo concept truck cuts fuel consumption by a third01 June 2016

Volvo Trucks has announced that a new concept vehicle – the culmination of a five-year research project – has been shown to cut fuel consumption by almost one third.

The project was supported by the Swedish Energy Agency and the truck features improved aerodynamics (40%) that benefits both the tractor and trailer.

In addition to the aerodynamic improvements, the concept vehicle is fitted with newly-developed tyres with lower rolling resistance. The trailer weighs two tonnes less than the reference trailer, which translates into either lower fuel consumption or the possibility of a higher payload. The project also includes an improved driveline.

“We’ve modified the entire combination and optimised it for improved aerodynamics as much as possible,” says Åke Othzen, Volvo’s chief project manager.

“For instance, we use cameras instead of rear-view mirrors, which cuts air resistance, so less energy is needed to propel the truck.”

The combination was test driven on Swedish roads in autumn 2015.

The concept vehicle will not go into production, but Volvo says some of its aerodynamic features have already been implemented on series-produced vehicles and more of its features may be fitted in future.
