Volvo drives up appeal on new heavy-duty range03 March 2020

Volvo Trucks has launched four new trucks, designed to deliver maximum appeal to drivers as well as safety and productivity improvements.

The four heavy-duty trucks are new generations of the FH, FH16, FM and FMX models, which together represent around two-thirds of Volvo Trucks sales.

“Our new trucks will help drivers work even more safely and productively, and give our customers stronger arguments when competing to attract the best drivers,” says Roger Alm, president of Volvo Trucks.

The models are available with several cab options for a range of applications, including long haul, regional and construction. Volvo says visibility, comfort, ergonomics, noise level, manoeuvrability and safety were key design points, along with a new exterior.

The FM and FMX have a new cab, as well as many of the same instrument display functions as their larger stablemates. Interior volume has been increased by up to one cubic metre, and visibility is improved thanks to larger windows, a lowered door line and new mirrors.

The steering wheel is equipped with a neck tilt function for individual adjustment. The lower bed in the sleeper cab is higher than before, for more comfort and to create additional storage space underneath. The day cab has a new 40-litre storage compartment with interior lighting on the back wall. Reinforced insulation helps with temperature and noise control, and there is sensor-controlled climate unit with a carbon filter.

All models have a new digital instrument display, with a 12in screen. There is also a 9in side display for infotainment, navigation, transport information and camera monitoring. All functions can be controlled via buttons on the steering wheel, by voice control, or via the touchscreen and display control panel.

Safety enhancements include adaptive high beam headlights in the FH and FH16; an new adaptive cruise control system; electronically controlled EBS as standard; optional Volvo Dynamic Steering; and road sign recognition.

Volvo says the trucks will be offered with a range of drivelines, including the LNG-powered engine for the FH and FM. The new FH is also available with a new Euro VI turbo compound diesel engine, the D13TC, which is included in the manufacturer’s I-Save package and can, it says, deliver 7% fuel savings.
