The new truck was specified with just about every extra – including Volvo’s latest dual clutch and dynamic steering options on this 6,000mm wheelbase 6x2 tag axle chassis.
“The new dual clutch transmission is seamless and its ultra-smooth gearshifts benefit the horses’ comfort and welfare,” explains Malcolm.
“Unlike previous gear change systems, there are no momentum surges when moving either up or down gears,” he continues.
“And dynamic steering is already proving its worth, as many of the events we attend are entered via country lanes and fairly narrow field gates. The new FH can be placed millimetre perfect in these situations.”
Meanwhile, Malcolm also went for full air suspension on all three axles as well as an adjustable roll suspension that restores the truck to a level horizon when parked on sloping ground.
And rounding off the kit, he also specified Volvo’s I-See and Adaptive Cruise Control plus the Volvo Engine Brake, as well as Volvo’s Lane Change Support and Driver Alert systems.
As for the horsebox body, Ware, Hertfordshire-based Oakley Coachbuilders has installed a Supremacy body that is more like a moving hotel than a horsebox.
Behind the Globetrotter XL cab is a living area with motorsport style with extendable sides that sleeps six people in comfort.
The three-seat, FH cab interior has been trimmed to match the living quarters while the horses also travel in comfort, with the side-facing stalls housing up to five animals.
CCTV monitors linked into the dashboard’s satellite navigation screen monitor the horses en route, while feeding and ventilation systems ensure a stress-free journey.
Externally, bi-Xenon headlamps are joined by an array of driving, loading and vehicle perimeter lights that illuminate the truck when on the move or parked at an event.
And an on-board load indicator monitors weight distribution to ensure full legal compliance.
Fully-loaded with crew, horses and tack, generator and heating system, as well as 600 litres of diesel plus 900 litres of fresh water, the FH-460 weighs in at a total of 24.5 tonnes.
“This is our fifth family-owned Volvo horsebox and the latest FH was a natural progression on the previous model,” states Malcolm, who is not only big in transport but also equestrian circles.
The three Malcolm family members who compete on horseback – Andrew himself, wife Fiona and daughter Nicola, are all highly experienced eventing competitors, but also all hold LGV licences.
