Volvo launches FL 4x4 for urban and off-road duty 08 December 2014

Volvo's FL truck is now available in a permanently engaged four-wheel drive (4x4) version, offering payloads of 6—8 tonnes, for service and off-road applications.

According to John Comer, product manager at Volvo Trucks UK & Ireland, the new truck retains the FL's compactness manoeuvrability, comfort and torque, but with improved traction and ground clearance.

"The Volvo FL with four-wheel drive with its 2.1m cab, and wheelbase options from 3350mm to 4100 is compact and versatile and can perform challenging service tasks on all types of road surfaces," states Comer.

The new FL 4x4 is available at 12-, 14- or 16-tonnes gvw, and is aimed at applications ranging from cherry pickers to cranes and fire tenders.

It is available with a day cab, a three-person comfort cab, and optional bench seat or seven-seat four-door crew cab.

"The most noticeable difference with the new Volvo FL with 4x4 is the raised off-road chassis and 22.5-inch wheels, which increases ground clearance by just over 6 cm at the front and 10 cm at the rear," states Comer.

"The higher chassis also increases the vehicle approach angle to 25 degrees, making it easier for the truck to drive out of ditches or deep ruts."

As for performance, the new truck is equipped with Volvo's Euro 6, six-cylinder D8K 250bhp or 280bhp engine, matched to a standard six-speed manual gearbox with high and low gear setting.

It also has deep rear axle ratios of 5.86:1 or 6.31:1. An automatic box is available to special order.

The truck can also be equipped with an extra air nipple on the chassis for operating various accessories or inflating tyres.
