Safety director Peter Kronberg says the idea is to let children experience what drivers can see, and help them understand how best to behave around trucks, buses and cars to stay safe.
Two training kits have been developed: one basic, the other in-depth kit for use by educators, youth group leaders, police and others who work with children.
There is also a 'street mat' as well as a 'licence', which can be downloaded and printed for use in the training sessions.
The objective, says Kronberg – pointing to the fact that 260,000 children under the age of 19 die in traffic accidents every year – is to build on the UN's recent global safety campaign – and to spread the work of its Safety Week to help children in traffic every day, all year round.
Volvo has been running child safety events for several years, with traffic and site safety programs all over the world.
In Volvo's Gothenburg headquarters, the Volvo Museum organises information tours for local schools.
Museum staff find that children know about aircraft that have disappeared in recent years. However, when asked whether they know an equivalent of 13 aircraft full of passengers 'disappear' every day in the form of road deaths worldwide, children fall very silent.
"With our safety campaigns for children, we have succeeded in packaging the information in a manner that arouses their interest and feels relevant to them," states Kronberg.
"Sometimes, a few good tips are sufficient to save lives," he adds.
Commercial vehicles are implicated in about 10% of fatal road accidents, and Volvo Group says it is committed to accelerating progress in road safety for all road users – focusing particularly (but not only) on human behaviour.
