Volvo trucks fuel economy pleased Lancashire haulier 06 December 2011

MJ Griffiths Transport managing director Mick Griffiths is "very impressed" with the fuel economy of his first-ever Volvo trucks.

Griffiths reports that the two new Volvo FH-500 6x2 tractor units to join the 16 strong mixed fleet of his Burscough, Lancashire-based company, are achieving between 9 and 10 mpg at 44-tonnes.

"That's 2mpg better than other trucks in the fleet and we expect them to improve as their mileage increases. We're saving up to £100 a day on our fuel bill, as a result of the two new Volvos' economy."

Both trucks were supplied by Thomas Hardie Commercials on a three-year Volvo contract hire package – the first venture into contract hire by MJ Griffiths. Mileage is expected to be around 900,000km during the contract term and Griffiths reports that only Volvo was prepared to offer a three-year term on such high mileage.

MJ Griffiths' trucks rack up the miles on double shifts, trunking fresh fruit and vegetables to wholesalers in London and Scotland – with names such as Gordon Ramsay, Heston Blumenthal and The Queen.
