Volvo Trucks names top apprentice and lines up quality intake for 201519 November 2014

Volvo Group UK's Jim Keyden Award 2014 has been presented to Billy Lang, who is the top graduating apprentice of the year.

The trophy – named after the co-founder of Volvo Truck and Bus in the UK – is awarded to the apprentice who has displayed outstanding dedication to both practical and academic studies.

Billy is from the Glasgow East site of Volvo Truck and Bus Centre North & Scotland. He picked up his prize at the annual training awards ceremony, which this year was held at Stephenson College, Coalville – home to the Volvo Trucks apprenticeship programme.

Other recipients of awards included: Jonathan Devlin, also from Volvo Truck and Bus Centre North & Scotland, who picked up the prize for highest vocational achievement; and Owen Harrison, from Volvo Truck and Bus Centre, East Anglia, Peterborough, who won the highest academic achievement prize.

Volvo Trucks is confident of attracting a high quality group of applicants for its next apprenticeship intake, after reporting "unqualified success" from its attendance at last week's Skills Show (13-15 November, NEC, Birmingham).

It was the first time the company has attended the event and apprenticeship manager Adam Plastow says "a fantastic response" was achieved from young visitors.

Volvo Trucks is working with the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) to stage a Heavy Vehicle Skills competition at the 2015 Skills Show.
