Volvo unveils Euro 6 FM car transporter29 August 2014

Volvo's Euro 6 FM series is now available for car transporter applications, as a low height 6x2 rigid with sleeper cab.

Working with trailer manufacturers Transporter Engineering and Belle Rolfo, Volvo has designed the 11-car transporter with overall cab height under 2,800mm.

At 21,450kg, the gvw remains the same as its predecessor Euro 5 vehicle. Axle ratings are 9,000kg for the front, 4,500kg for the pusher and 11,500kg for the drive axle.

Fuel capacity has been boosted from 450 to 540 litres by positioning a 330-litre capacity fuel tank on the right of the chassis, with another on the left holding either 170 or 210 litres. AdBlue capacity has also been increased by 4 litres to 64 litres.

The FM car transporter is available with a choice of Euro 6 engines – the D11K and the D13K.

The 11-litre D11K is rated at 330, 370, 410 and 450bhp, while the 13-litre D13K is offered at 420, 460 and 500bhp.

Volvo says that power and torque curves for the D13K 420bhp and 460bhp ratings have been improved by 100rpm, resulting in better driveability and allowing a faster rear-axle ratio of 2.64:1.

The low-height sleeper cab has a clean profile, with all aerials mounted on the cab's rear panel.

The I-shift automated gearbox can be specified with a traditional lever or a dash-mounted button.

The vehicle is also offered with the option of Volvo's I-See transmission, which measures and memorises hilly terrain to control gear shifting automatically and hence boost fuel performance.
