VW unveils its new-look Transporter20 April 2015

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has unveiled its new-look Transporter, ahead of the vehicle going on sale in the UK later this year.

The sixth-generation, says VW, offers improved fuel economy, safety features and better comfort and convenience, and offers varied seating configurations.

New 2-litre TDI engines offer from 84bhp to 204bhp; four-cylinder petrol variants are also 2-litres, delivering 150 or 204bhp.

All have a stop-start system fitted as standard – VW says this could reduce overall fuel consumption by 15%.

The new range also has adaptive chassis control – called Dynamic Cruise Control (DCC) – meaning the Transporter can be adapted to comfort, normal or sport driving modes.

Automatic tailgate operation is offered as an option, and the vehicle incorporates a range of safety features.

Front Assist, for example, uses radar to detect the vehicle ahead, jolting the brake if the distance reduces to a dangerous level, or adjusting automatically if adaptive cruise control (ACC) is engaged.

ACC and Front Assist also combine to offer a City Emergency Braking function, giving assistance at low speeds and automatically applying the brakes if the driver fails to spot an obstacle.

Light Assist, meanwhile, switches the main beam on and off automatically, while Driver Alert highlights unusual driving behaviour and recommends the driver takes a break.

A further option is Hill Descent Assist, which applies the brakes to individual wheels and cuts engine speed to ensure a controlled descent.

Inside, all models have a Bluetooth hands-free system and a touchscreen infotainment system.
