Weight limit extension announced in Ireland for drawbar trailer combinations05 May 2015

Ireland’s Road Safety Authority has announced an extension to the weight limit for drawbar trailer combinations to 46 tonnes gvw.

From next month (1 June), owners/operators ofrigid truck and drawbar trailer combinations with six or more axles will have the option of operating at 46 tonnes. This represents up to a 4-tonne increase over the pre-existing national weight limit, and aligns with the limit applicable to six-axle articulated vehicle combinations which came into effect two years ago.

The Freight Transport Association Ireland (FTAI) says it is "delighted", adding that this will mean fewer road journeys for heavy goods vehicles in Ireland.

Neil Mc Donnell, general manager for FTAI, says: "We have been calling for this introduction for a long time now, and this will help ensure more efficient transport operations and reduce the total number of vehicle journeys, while protecting the modern roads estate Ireland has built up over the last 10 years."
