Wordsworth underlines reliability with Volvo FM tanker30 May 2017

Wordsworth Excavations has taken delivery of a Volvo FM 6x2 rear-steer fuel tanker to support its on and off-highway fleets as the company expands its range of services.

Supplied by dealer Crossroads Truck and Bus of Birstall, the Barnsley-based operator’s new tanker truck replaces a similar 2012 model that has been retained as a back-up.

The new 26-tonne gvw, 420bhp vehicle has a day cab and is equipped with an 18,000-litre tanker body, by RTN of Barnsley. RTN also fitted the pumping equipment and meter.

“Operating our own fuel tanker gives us a reliability of service to our work sites and our trucks out in the field that can’t be equalled,” says managing director Thomas Wordsworth.

He adds: “Attributes of the Volvo FM 6x2 rear-steer that have really won us over are the overall driver comfort, the truck’s power and the smooth delivery of that power through the I-Shift transmission.”

The truck is expected to cover 90,000km a year and has been supplied with a five-year Gold R&M contract.

The operator is also taking delivery of six new Volvo FM 8x4 tipper trucks with Thompson bodies. As with the fuel tanker, it has opted for day cabs and the 420bhp D13K engine, producing up to 2,100Nm of torque, and the 12-speed I-Shift automated transmission.

“With both the fuel tanker and the tippers, the decision to choose Volvo was not a difficult one,” says Wordsworth.

“Alongside the reliability, fuel efficiency, local dealer support and robust build, I also think the current generation Volvo trucks just have it in the aesthetics department.”
