Workshop technician in the driving seat10 June 2019

Gary Voisey, workshop technician at Mercedes-Benz dealer City West Commercials, has secured his Class 1 (categories C+E) truck licence – part of his preparation for the arrival of the new Actros.

“It makes my job easier as if an Actros had problems that only occur while loaded, as I can drive it with a trailer to help assess the fault rather than getting someone else with a Class 1 to drive for me,” explains Voisey (pictured).

The Bristol-based technician is also sitting an exam for a system technician qualification, and is using a range of means, including video tutorials, to familiarise himself with the new vehicle before the first demonstrators are delivered.

Voisey adds: “I'm looking forward to the launch of the new Actros, as I'm eager to check out the new on-board technology but mainly because they have an electronic cab tilt system fitted as standard! Pumping a cab over at 7am is hard work but certainly wakes you up.”

Another highlight, he says, will be MirrorCam, a system of cameras and in-cab screens to replace the rear-view mirror, which Voisey describes as “a game-changer”.
