Brian Yeardley Continental has taken delivery of two Globetrotter XL-cabbed, Volvo FH-500 4x2, X-Low chassis tractor units for evaluation purposes.
The logistics specialist is to conduct fuel trials on the trucks, each of which is powered by Volvo's 13-litre D13C Euro 5 engine, rated at 500bhp.
The new FHs, which were supplied by Crossroads at Normanton, have been specified with Volvo's latest fuel saving technology, including the I-Shift gearbox with long-haul and fuel economy+ software, plus the I-See predictive gear selection system, which uses GPS to memorise roads and gradients.
Brian Yeardley Continental managing director Kevin Hopper says he is conducting the fuel trial with Euro 5 vehicles as the company needs to order trucks in the autumn, before the Euro 6 compliance is enforced.
He says the current fleet fuel average across all truck makes operated is 9.5mpg, and maintains that is the figure the Volvos have to beat to secure future business.
