Technicians at the heart of DAF success02 May 2021

DAF Trucks – the UK’s market-leading manufacturer of trucks over 6.0-tonnes GVW – credits its nationwide DAF Dealer network for a remarkable 26 unbroken years at the top of the UK sales charts. That success is built on the skills, knowledge and commitment of its technicians.

The network is recognised by many industry observers as offering the transport sector’s premier aftersales service, with the DAFaid roadside assistance programme seen as the jewel-in-the-crown of the DAF customer support portfolio. Ensuring its effective implementation and based throughout the 135-location DAF Dealer network, are 1500 highly-skilled DAF Technicians – having all completed IRTEC training and benefitting from dedicated DAF Service and Parts training. Many DAF Technicians have graduated through the DAF Apprenticeship programme provided through City of Bristol College and work placement around the network. The programme is now its 26th year and has just won the Silver award at the 2021 Global Learning Awards; Apprentice Programme of the Year category.

DAF Trucks places huge emphasis on workshop training, with regular practical courses and seminars for technicians delivered in purpose-built training facilities at DAF Trucks’ HQ in Haddenham. Training continued throughout the recent coronavirus lockdowns via virtual classroom training, with face-to-face courses now being reintroduced following the easing of restrictions. During the pandemic, DAF Trucks was able to deliver a full nationwide aftersales service with DAFaid remaining fully operational and Parts supplies maintained throughout the network in order to support crucial transport services.

“We are always looking to recruit keen and committed technicians,” said Suzanne Moore, DAF Training Manager at DAF Trucks, “a workshop role in the DAF Dealer network is a sound career choice, with abundant opportunities to develop a broader technical skillset to mirror future technological developments. As market leader, there’s always a demand for good technicians and, with road transport returning to normal levels, we’re also creating job opportunities right across the DAF Dealer network.”

DAF Trucks is proud to be supporting British manufacturing. The Dutch-brand is part of the US-based PACCAR Inc organisation, sitting alongside Leyland Trucks, the Lancashire-based production plant where UK right-hand-drive DAF vehicles are produced. It is also ‘home’ to DAF’s successful LF series of vehicles and is PACCAR’s centre of light and medium duty truck design. DAF is ready for the future with its zero-emission LF Electric, now in production at Leyland and on sale alongside the CF Electric.

Investment, therefore, in attracting and up-skilling, highly-motivated Technicians takes even greater precedence for DAF Trucks and the DAF Dealer network. With its focus on training – for both school-leavers and established Technicians – there has never been a more exciting time to be part of the DAF family.
