Alexander Dennis inks major midibus deal down under13 January 2011

A deal worth £25 million to Alexander Dennis (ADL) has been signed with NZ Bus, of Auckland, New Zealand.

The contract is for the production and delivery of 120 Enviro200 midi buses, and follows a global tendering process, which featured 30 manufacturers from New Zealand, Australia, China, Brazil and Europe.

Describing the contract win as a "major breakthrough", Colin Robertson, ADL's chief executive, says it will greatly strengthen the company's export business, adding significantly to the existing work it has with operators in North America and Asia.

"We have worked closely with NZ Bus for many months to ensure that we meet the objectives of their long-term fleet replacement programme, which aims to provide a new era of environment-friendly, cost-effective buses," he explains.

Robertson also believes there is more to come: "In truth, this is much more than just an important contract. It is the start of a significant business relationship that has the potential to see us deliver a further 200 to 300 buses into New Zealand in the next three to four years – and to use the location as a spring-board into other territories, notably Australia."

Commenting on the order, Bruce Emson, CEO of NZ Bus, reveals: "This is the single biggest investment made by our business since it was acquired by Infratil in 2005. It also forms part of our long-range vision to create an unrivalled bus transport system that can be the envy of the world."
