Asda returns to Scania for another 187 tractor units 26 March 2013

Citing operating economy, whole life costs and outstanding service as key purchasing criteria, Asda has now ordered another 187 vehicles from Scania.

The order is for 120 trucks for the Asda retail distribution fleet, 55 for its primary network and 12 for its petroleum fleet.

John Rogerson, Asda's fleet contracts manager, explains that the 120 trucks for Asda's retail fleet are a mix of 420bhp 4x2 and 6x2/2 pusher-axle tractor units with Scania G sleeper-cabs – as are the 55 primary network trucks.

Operated by NFT on behalf of Asda, these vehicles will each cover 200,000 miles annually, running between NFT's three UK consolidation centres and eight Asda chilled distribution centres.

Finally, he says, the 12 petroleum tankers are all 440bhp 6x2/2s with Scania G day cabs.

"Asda and Scania have enjoyed a long-standing relationship, which has consistently delivered excellent results, both in terms of day-to-day operational performance and overall transport economy," says Rogerson.

"As a key supplier whose operations are integrated into many of our activities – including, for example, tanker support and trailer maintenance – we rely upon Scania to deliver the levels of service and quality our customers expect and demand of us," he adds.

Among the retail distribution fleet are 42 vehicles supplied with the Ecolution by Scania service package. This is aimed at helping operators to achieve the best possible transport economy and operational efficiency from their fleets.

"With regard to operating economy, Scania has a well-proven record with us, which we are now looking to take to the next level by way of the Ecolution by Scania programme," states Rogerson.

"And, on that, the early indications are excellent, with our 42 new Ecolution by Scania vehicles returning a significant fuel advantage, compared to our existing fleet," he says.
