Bacton Transport takes eight more Actros tractors 10 March 2015

Suffolk haulier Bacton Transport has taken delivery of eight new Mercedes-Benz Actros tractor units, all of which are fleet extensions.

The Sowmarket-based haulier's first Euro 6 tractor units are all Actros 2545 trucks with aerodynamic StreamSpace cabs, acquired through CharterWay contract hire with Mercedes-Benz Financial Services.

They are powered by Mercedes 449bhp straight-six engines driv through smooth Mercedes ing through PowerShift 3 automated transmissions.

In a 'first' for the operator, they have also been equipped with Predictive Powertrain Control (PPC), which employs 3D GPS mapping to read 3km of topography ahead to control speed, braking and the transmission to maximise fuel efficiency.

Fuel-efficiency, driver thumbs up and good after-sales support by local dealer Orwell Truck & Van have kept Bacton with Mercedes for 10 years, according to director Edward Downie.

The new tractors join eight other tractor units from the current Actros generation, five of which were among the first to enter service in the UK in the autumn of 2012, as well as four MegaSpace units from the previous Actros range.

Bacton Transport has also taken delivery of six new SDC curtainsided semi-trailers with tail-lifts for horticultural work. Another six are due from Montracon in April.

"We commissioned our first Actros in 2004, and fuel efficiency and driver acceptance were both very good from the outset," confirms Downie.

"The new-shape Actros have performed particularly well in terms of fuel efficiency, regularly returning over 10 mpg," he continues.

"We look forward to seeing by how much the PPC systems can improve on figures which are already excellent."
