Beverley Bell promoted to Senior Traffic Commissioner 08 June 2012

The North Western Traffic Commissioner Beverley Bell has been appointed Senior Traffic Commissioner for Great Britain, having been Acting Senior Traffic Commissioner for some time, following the retirement of Philip Brown.

Mrs Bell, who is an SOE Honorary Fellow will also continue in her role as Traffic Commissioner for the North West of England.

One of her tasks when she acted as Deputy and Acting Senior Traffic Commissioner was to work with fellow commissioners to develop the first set of Statutory Senior Traffic Commissioner Directions and Guidance Documents, issued on 02 December 2011.

"I am delighted to take on this very important role for the next four years," states Mrs Bell.

"Although the introduction of the Statutory Guidance and Directions provided greater clarity about the work of the traffic commissioners, there is still much work to be done in conjunction with the Department for Transport, VOSA [the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency] and other government agencies.

"Commissioners want to ensure that we maintain our effectiveness and success as regulators but also look at ways of modernising that regulation," she continues.

"We also want to continue to make Britain's roads safer and competition in the commercial vehicle industry fairer, seeing the seriously non-compliant commercial vehicle operators targeted effectively," adds Mrs Bell.

"This will require close working with VOSA, to outline the requirements of the regulator, and by extension the expectations of the industry.

"Our regulation as traffic commissioners depends entirely on referrals from VOSA and other government agencies and so I look forward to working with the CEO of VOSA to achieve the traffic commissioners' mission statement of championing safe, fair and reliable passenger and goods transport."
