The operator says a range of measures have contributed to the reduction, including driver training, new vehicles, fewer empty trailer runs, energy-saving lighting and electric materials handling equipment (MHE).
Andrew Mawson (pictured), Bibby Distribution’s head of safety, health, environment and quality, says: “Our drivers are playing a significant role through improved vehicle operation, our fleet is the most efficient we’ve ever had, and we’ve reduced empty runs by 40% each month.
“The focus we’ve given to improving our warehousing practices has also delivered phenomenal results.”
Tailored driving programmes have helped to eliminate engine idling and harsh braking – cutting fleet carbon emissions, while also reducing the company’s accident rate by 15% over the last year.
Earlier this year, three of the operator’s drivers picked up prizes at the Microlise driver of the year awards: Mark Field won overall driver of the year, plus the ‘short distance’ category; John Hales won a lifetime achievement award; and Dale Coppin was runner-up in the ‘HGV hero’ category.
