Brand engineers fuel savings with largest Mercedes Citan order02 September 2014

Engineering service provider Brand Energy & Infrastructure Services has placed the largest single order for Mercedes Citan vans, taking delivery of 152 Citan 109 CDIs.

The vans were supplied by dealer S&B Commercials, along with 23 Sprinter 313 CDI chassis cabs, on a LeasePlan contract hire deal.

The Citans are all extra-long Dualiner vehicles, with a second row of seats, as they are used primarily to transport scaffolders and other operatives to and from sites.

They feature top-hinged bulkheads – designed by BEIS – for additional safety, which can be folded back, along with the rear three-seat bench, to provide more capacity for cargo when required.

The 90bhp Citans and 129bhp, dropside-bodied Sprinters have all been fitted with speed limiters at 62mph.

Transport manager John McKeever says emissions and fuel costs have improved across the fleet.

"Some of the Citans are returning as much as 62 mpg, which represents a 12 mpg improvement over the light vans we were running previously," he says.

Each vehicle is contracted to cover 30,000 miles a year, with maintenance and repairs being undertaken by Mercedes dealers across the UK.

The deal also includes guaranteed emergency call-out within 59 minutes, should any breakdowns occur.

Tamworth-based Brand Energy & Infrastructure Services (BEIS) was formed by a merger of Brand with Harsco Infrastructure, and includes the SGB Scaffolding business.
