BT Openreach to trial electric vans 13 December 2010

Trails by BT Openreach of four electric vans have started in Milton Keynes and East London.

The two locations will be running vehicles supplied by Allied Electric and Smith Electric Vehicles, which have converted two Peugeot and two Ford zero emission vans respectively.

Aim of the trials is to see if these electric vehicles could help in the firm's plans to cut its carbon output by 80% by 2020.

In particular, BT Openreach says it will be testing them for their suitability for engineers' work patterns, battery life and energy use.

If the trials are successful, BT Openreach says it will use them more widely across its 23,400 strong fleet.
