Cardiff and Vale College brings irtec technician assessment to Wales05 December 2013

The IRTE's road transport technician licensing scheme irtec is being brought to Wales, with the opening of a new assessment centre at Cardiff and Vale College (CAVC).

CAVC now offers assessments at irtec's Inspection Technician licence level and is looking to expand to include the Service Maintenance Technician level shortly.

The irtec licensing scheme is seeing a resurgence across both HGV and PSV sectors of the road transport industry as operators and workshops seek to demonstrate compliance and technical excellence when maintaining commercial vehicles.

Robert Court, commercial vehicle course director for CAVC, explains that the new centre at CAVC, which is the only college in Wales approved to offer irtec assessments, means that companies no longer need to send technicians to centres in England for their theory and practical tests.

"The College has always been involved in delivering high quality training in the bus and truck arena, and the irtec qualification is a welcome addition to the college's portfolio of courses," states Court.

"There have been many studies into the benefits of the irtec programme and the return on investment for employers undertaking the irtec assessment with their staff. The college can now support firms who wish to take advantage of this."

As part of the approval process, CAVC worked closely with Cardiff Bus to deliver its first irtec Inspection Technician assessment to David Blackburn, one of the company's technicians.

"With the approval of Cardiff and Vale College as an irtec assessment centre, operators across Wales can now benefit from this scheme, which promotes rigorous industry standards for vehicle repair and maintenance," comments Ian Chisholm, Head of Operations at IRTE's umbrella organisation SOE (Society of Operations Engineers).

"Operators who insist on the irtec guarantee can be confident their vehicles are maintained by technicians that are fully competent," he adds.
