Champion chippie upgrades to new refrigerated Canter 07 September 2010

Award-winning fish and chip retailer George's Tradition has taken delivery of a new 7.5-tonne Canter 7C18 truck, with insulated body by Jackson Coachworks.

The Derby-based company, which has a string of 10 outlets throughout Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Staffordshire, says it needed a larger vehicle to keep pace with the growing popularity of its products.

Production manager Terry Corcoran explains that it works six days a week alongside a pair of Mercedes-Benz Sprinter vans and has replaced a third.

"We can get four pallets on this new vehicle which means it can stay out longer and make more deliveries," he says.

George's new vehicle was supplied by Derby-based Mercedes-Benz dealer Mertrux and has separate compartments for chilled and frozen products.

"We chose the Canter for its excellent payload – even with its relatively heavy body and refrigeration unit, it will still carry 3,217kg. It's also very compact for a 7.5-tonner, which makes life easier for our drivers when they're delivering to shops, many of which are on busy high streets," says Corcoran.

"We also take comfort from the fact that our Canter will be maintained by Mertrux, who provide a very good service. I've not been with this company for very long but have already been impressed by the dealer's flexibility – it's able to service our vehicles at times that suit us, rather than the other way round," he adds.
