Coach operator squares the circle on performance with Scania28 October 2014

Coach operator City Circle UK has ordered 16 Scania Irizar i6 coaches – Scania's largest retail coach order for 20 years – after being "delighted" with the performance of six similar vehicles acquired last year.

The 12.9m long vehicles on order are based on Scania's K-series 6x2*4 tri-axle rear-steer chassis, and will feature a Euro 6 410bhp engine which uses SCR (selective catalytic reduction) technology.

Each vehicle has 53 reclining seats with leather and extra-padded flaps, seat-back tables and footrests. Other interior equipment includes a centre sunken toilet/washroom and a Frenzel kitchen.

Also included are reversing and road cameras, integrated satellite navigation equipment, Durabright aluminium wheels and extra-dark tinted double glazing.

The Hayes, Middlesex-based operator took six 10.8m Irizar i6 vehicles in 2013 and managing director Neil Pegg says he was "delighted with how the vehicles have performed over the first 18 months".

He adds "I had the opportunity to evaluate the new Euro 6 13-litre Scania engine with the tri-axle Irizar i6 body this season. It has performed superbly, and driver and passenger feedback has been excellent."

This, he says, combined with Scania's package and flexible approach, resulted in the latest deal.

The new coaches will be delivered in spring 2015.
