Collett Transport acquires massive side girder deck 08 July 2014

Collett Transport has taken delivery of a new modular Scheuerle STB 550 side girder deck, capable of handling 550 tonnes and built with a record ratio of 5:2 payload to deadweight.

"Today we are delighted to present a ready-for-operation side girder deck [offering] a ratio of 5:2 payload to deadweight," said Bernd Schwengsbier, managing director of TII Sales (part of the TII Group which includes Scheuerle, Nicolas and Kamag) at the handover.

"However, if we omit the load distribution frame, as is common when calculating this ratio, the factor becomes a currently unrivalled 6:6."

"The new side girder deck closes the last gap in our fleet," stated Lincoln Collett, technical director for multi-modal logistics operator Collett Transport.

"The co-operation between Collett and Scheuerle has worked excellently and we are extremely satisfied with the outcome."

And Dr Axel Müller, managing director of the TII Group, added that the new side girder deck encompasses expertise from all three of his companies – Scheuerle, Nicholas and Kamag.

For Collett, the appeal of the STB 550 does not lie only in its sheer size and brute strength and flexibility, but also its technology, which includes hydraulic widening.

Collett Transport will initially use the vehicle to transport 350-tonne transformers but has the ability to increase its carrying capacity to a 550-tonne full version, with the installation of a second deck set, to accommodate other loads.

In operation, loads are placed on the top boom but they can also be supported with additional load suspension gear and cross beams.

Cargoes can also be coupled directly, without the main load beam, while the vehicle can also accommodate and lower cargoes without cranes, using additional support chassis.

Available deck lengths range from 29.2—34.200 metres, while the loading width ranges from 3.45—7.4 metres, running at a height of 1.65 metres.
