Delivery fleet sees growth out of real-time vehicle tracking01 February 2010

Fleet managers looking after the 25-strong Sprintshift fleet have reported great efficiency gains, thanks to the adoption of tracking technology from Navman Wireless.

Prior to fitting the OnlineAVL2 tracking software, Sprintshift was relying on a timesheet-based admin system to process overtime and driver hours details.

Thanks to the tracking system, introduced initially to SprintShift's vehicles two years ago, the company has managed to reduce overtime "dramatically", and increase backloads throughout the fleet.

"Vehicle tracking has enabled us to reduce timesheet errors and false entries, time wastage between routes, and increase fleet optimisation," comments Justin Hayes, transport manager at Sprintshift.

"We can also monitor vehicle movements, and see if they are parked up for longer than they should be. If drivers haven't got valid reasons for stopping for protracted periods of time, we then cut costs by deducting this from the driver's wages."

Sprintshift says that, as a direct result of implementing Navman, the fleet will be increased before March to include a new Artic and four other vehicles. It seems word of the increased efficiency has spread, and the company is now receiving more phone calls and giving more instant answers – rather than having to go away, check where a driver is, and then phone back.

Hayes says an additional benefit has been reducing wasted time on a journey. The transport office can now contact a driver directly and adjust a route, if there is a quicker and more efficient alternative.
