Consult drivers on vehicle technology, urges TomTom 23 August 2012

Research by TomTom suggests that almost half of UK operators face resistance from drivers when introducing new technology to their vehicle fleets.

The satnav firm believes that the problem could be overcome by better communication between managers and employees – but 58% of managers admitted they do not conduct formal consultations.

"In order to profit from the gains in efficiency and productivity offered by fleet management technology, businesses must properly manage change by involving drivers," insists Giles Margerison, TomTom Business Solutions director for the UK & Ireland.

Margerison cites the example of Zenith Hygiene Systems, which has achieved yearly fuel savings of £218,000 by gaining employee buy-in for a scheme designed to improve driving style, using a fleet management system.

"By partnering with the right fleet management technology provider, firms can access expert advice and consultancy to ease the transition and better communicate benefits to staff," he maintains.
