Continental unveils flower power20 September 2016

Continental will be showcasing its use of rubber from dandelion roots at the forthcoming IAA Show (Hanover; 22-29 September).

The new raw material, called Taraxagum, is being used in truck tyres and components such as engine mountings and propeller shaft bearings.

The rubber has featured in a passenger tyre, but this is the first time that Continental will unveil its use in products for commercial vehicles.

The tyre on show will be the Conti EcoPlus HD3, manufactured this year. Visitors can also see a prototype for an engine mount that links the powertrain with the chassis, which insulates the structure-borne noise from the engine, thereby enhancing ride quality and driver safety.

Another product on display will be the first example of an intermediate propeller shaft bearing – Continental says the use of Taraxagum stabilises and minimises vibration transmission to the chassis.

Continental’s Dr Anna Misiun says the tests on truck tyres are “extremely promising” and says the alternative rubber source is “ideal” for the commercial vehicle sector.

She adds: “The new dandelion rubber Taraxagum should enter production within the next five to ten years.
