Cosham Plant Hire goes for Andover Volvo combo rigid 23 July 2015

Cosham Plant Hire’s fleet has been augmented with a new Andover Trailers plant body mounted on a 32 tonne Volvo FM420 8x2 rear-steer rigid truck.

The body was specified with a beavertail, incorporating Andover Trailers' hydraulic fold forward power toe ramps, claimed to improve the vehicle's aerodynamics and hence also fuel consumption.

"Our previous vehicle had come up for renewal and we had seen a similar vehicle, built by Andover Trailers, being used by another company," explains Ken Newell, transport manager at the Havant, Hampshire-based plant hire operator.

"The truck was exactly what we were looking for and we decided to order one ourselves," he adds.

Additional features specified for Cosham's new plant body include six pairs of lashing points, which allow the various types of plant to be safely and securely transported, plus an electric winch, which can be operated by remote or radio control.

Other safety features include red LED lights set into the floor to illuminate the edge of the vehicle as well as amber strobes between the ramps. And the vehicle has hydraulic steady legs and a toolbox.

Newell also makes the point that the plant body's deck height is five inches lower than a regular plant body, which allows for lower ramp and beavertail approach angles.

"We needed a vehicle that performed well under a range of conditions as it will be used for general access to different types of sites when delivering plant equipment," he explains.

"With site access becoming tighter and more restricted we needed a reliable and manoeuvrable vehicle and our new plant body ticks all the boxes."
