Cummins announces electrified powertrain plans21 June 2017

Cummins has announced that it will begin delivering fully electrified powertrains in 2019 as part of its strategy to diversify into all markets.

The announcement came as part of global update of the company’s position, during which company executives underlined how Cummins is positioned to lead in current and future technologies.

“Over the past 100 years, our ability to innovate and adapt has fuelled our success and we are confident we are on the right path to do it again at this critical juncture,” said Tom Linebarger, chairman and CEO.

We are prepared to provide a range of power technologies to our customers, from diesel and natural gas to fully electric and hybrid powertrains, to ensure they always have the best solution for their application.”

Earlier this year, Cummins enhanced its efforts to commercialise its electrification capabilities and says it is exploring partnerships with other firms for energy storage, power electronics, traction motor systems and component control for commercial applications.

The electrified powertrains in 2019 will include battery electric and plug-in hybrids, says the company.

Cummins also reports that it is developing high efficiency gasoline technology that can deliver “diesel-like performance and durability”, complying with stringent emission requirements while delivering competitive fuel economy.
