Cummins’ bus engines certified for Euro 6 24 June 2013

Cummins latest ISB engines have now been certified to the Euro 6 standards, while its ISL G natural gas engine is due for certification in October, ready for the January 2014 deadline.

ISB power units are available from 150 to 310ps, primarily for single and double deck buses and coaches, and are based on cooled EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) and VGT (variable geometry turbocharging) technologies, with conventional combined DPF (diesel particulate filter) and SCR (selective catalytic reduction).

According to Jonathan Atkinson, chief engineer of product development, the successful certification is a result of a three-year ISB Euro 6 development programme, with engineers carrying out more than 30,000km of product validation in Spain and Scandinavia to ensure emissions compliance.

"Our testing has successfully validated Cummins' hardware and control strategy for Euro 6 in extreme temperatures," comments Atkinson.

"It has proven that the upgraded Euro 6 OBD system would not generate unnecessary fault codes that could limit vehicle operation in these difficult climates," he continues.

"This has been an important step in our development programme, ensuring that Cummins' Euro 6 package delivers for all vehicle users, wherever they operate."

Meanwhile, the Euro 6 ISL G natural gas engine – 8.9 litres, 250 to 320 ps and peak torque of 1,356Nm, again for bus applications,

It harnesses a combination of cooled EGR with stoichiometric combustion, enabling the use of efficient, maintenance-free three-way catalyst after-treatment.

"Cummins Engineers are working on the certification of the Euro 6 ISL G engine, with approval expected in October," confirms John Burgess, general manager for Cummins' gas engine business.

"This enables vehicle manufacturers to deliver Euro 6 vehicles in line with the legislation. Our expectation is that the ISL G will benefit our customers in helping them to provide a quiet, ultra-clean bus."
