DAF dealer talks up truck wheel alignment benefits26 April 2011

A DAF dealer in West Sussex is working hard to help hauliers reduce operational costs in the tough economic climate, by focusing on tyres.

Shoreham-by-Sea-based Barnes Group (which also operates out of Guildford) has acquired two TA-20 wheel aligners that it believes will help customers cut costs on fuel and tyres.

The DAF dealer purchased its alignment equipment from Haweka after seeing a demonstration in its workshops.

Alan Matthews, DAF group service manager, says the TA-20 takes less than 10 minutes to accurately measure every angle on a truck in the as-driven position, whether on twin steers, rigids, semi-trailers or buses.

"Wheel alignment offers a cost effective solution to … tyre life and better fuel economy," he says. "The cost of checking and adjusting the alignment of the steering is less than the cost of one new tyre.

"We purchased the kit to update the facilities we have in both workshops, as we had issues in the past regarding incorrect settings causing loss of revenue to the company. But the TA-20 is very easy to use and set up."

Haweka maintains that one degree of misalignment can be detrimental to fuel consumption by as much as 5%. Proper wheel alignment also increases tyre life and cuts emissions as well as wear on mechanical components.
