DHL partners with Don Bur to launch vehicle solar system06 June 2018

DHL has partnered with trailer maker Don Bur to launch TRAiLAR, a solar system designed for vehicle roofs.

Part of DHL’s declared target of zero emissions by 2050, TRAiLAR will initially be used by DHL Supply Chain in its own and customer fleets, before being made available to external operators from next year.

The system comprises thin film solar mats, which are fitted to vehicle roofs and connected to the vehicle’s battery or additional on-board batteries via a charge controller. The energy generated is used to power on-board equipment, such as tail-lifts.

During testing at Millbrook, fuel savings of up to 5.2% were achieved. This, in turn, will reduce CO2 emissions and maintenance spend, says DHL.

TRAiLAR can be installed on trailers and rigid vehicles.

Phil Roe, managing director for network logistics and transport, DHL Supply Chain UK and Ireland, says: “Ultimately, we need fewer, cleaner and quieter vehicles on the roads. This can be achieved while also helping customers reduce their transport costs.

“That’s why we’re committed to developing new sustainable transport solutions that can be rolled out across all supply chains for the benefit of the environment, the public and our customers.”
