Driverless vehicles will be a game-changer for logistics - DHL12 December 2014

A new report from DHL looks at the technology and potential applications for autonomous vehicles, including within the logistics supply chain.

'Self-Driving Vehicles in Logistics' describes the benefits and limitations of the technology and, says report author Dr Markus Kuckelhaus, these vehicles will "change the world of logistics".

He describes how the logistics sector is an early adopter, given that self-driving vehicles have been used for years in warehousing operations. Moving on to public roads, he adds, is the "next evolutionary step".

According to Kuckhelhaus, autonomous vehicles could be effective in any enclosed area where goods are loaded and transported, as well as isolated or remote outdoor locations where conditions and long hours place additional risk on drivers.

"Beyond that, I also see potential in line-haul transportation and last-mile delivery," he adds.

The report also covers the current barriers to wider adoption, such as regulations, public acceptance and liability.
