Knapen, which specialises in moving-floor trailers, designed and built this semi-trailer to maximise capacity for the transport of waste and compost.
As for the choice of four axles, Knapen says it chose this approach to eliminate any potential problems with overloaded axles due to poor weight distribution.
A Knapen spokesperson makes the point that transport engineers generally pair a three-axle tractor unit with a three-axle semi-trailer.
"But to use the additional axle under the truck properly, the trailer has to be loaded as much as possible at the front," he says.
Instead, Krol agreed to go for a two-axle tractor mated to this four-axle trailer – enabling better load distribution but also guaranteeing to a longer service life, explains the spokesperson.
"The axles are distributed a lot better along the length of the load [and] the fourth axle is steerable as well as being a lift axle," he says.
That results in the new trailer steering in much the same way as a conventional three-axle trailer – in forward and reverse motion – while making the first axle also a lift axle reduces empty running fuel costs.
Krol also selected a remote control for the moving floor and the the lift axle and lights.
