Electric bus wins National Transport Awards’ Excellence in Technology 08 October 2014

Milton Keynes' innovative wireless-charging electric bus project, running under Arriva, has won the Excellence in Technology category at the National Transport Awards.

The project involves eight fully-electric buses, which have replaced seven diesel buses in Milton Keynes on a five-year trial, working up to 17 hours a day, seven days a week.

The trial aims to demonstrate the commercial viability of low-carbon transport – also proving that fully-electric buses can economically compete with diesels even on the most demanding of duty cycles.

The Milton Keynes trial uses wireless charging technology to ensure that buses can run non-stop throughout the working day, and ensuring that electric buses can now do everything diesels can do.

"We are delighted with this win: this has been hugely successful and we are proud to be part of such an important, industry-leading project," states Maq Alibhai, operations director for Arriva.

"The electric bus is truly a great asset for Milton Keynes and the council, with Arriva and the other project partners, trusts this recognition gives others the confidence to take forward innovative projects," comments Brian Matthews, head of transport at Milton Keynes Council.

The award comes on top of last month's award by the Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership where the Milton Keynes electric bus was highly commended for its contribution to sustainable travel.
