Eminox launches filter theft deterrent at CV Show 25 April 2012

Retrofit DPF (diesel particulate filters) manufacturer Eminox announced a tie-up with TruckMinder yesterday (24 April 2012) at the CV Show, which will see the latter's equipment protection technology made available to Eminox customers.

The move follows Eminox's work fitting thousands of DPFs to HGVs in recent months – in part due to the introduction of London's low emission zone – which, according to the company, means this expensive kit need protection from theft or attack.

"There were more than 2,500 reports of filters being stolen in the first five months of 2011, and that number has continued to increase," states Kathye Henderson, marketing manager at Eminox.

"HGV's are a prime target, because they have larger systems with more precious metal. We wanted to offer help with this problem and the Truckminder system provides a package of protection options we think are the best solution for vehicle owners," she explains.

The TruckMinder protection offered is designed for catalysts and DPF systems, and uses microcontroller technology, with a sensor fitted to the DPF. Any attempt to cut or short circuit the cables, or to disconnect the battery, triggers a high decibel alarm.

Fitting a GSM autodialling modem is optional, but gives the added protection of sending theft alert text messages to assigned mobile phones. False alarms are prevented as the patented sensor apparently recognises and rejects 'non-threatening' events.

Cost of the system is around £300, which, say both companies, far outweighs the price of a new filter – which would set operators back around £3,500.
