European CV registrations up for the eighth month running29 May 2014

Strong demand continues across the EU for commercial vehicles, with registrations for April up by 5.1%, the eighth consecutive monthly increase.

Total CV registrations for the month were 151,571 units, driven by growth in the van and bus and coach segments, while the market for trucks and heavy trucks contracted.

Van registrations were up by 6.4% across the region, with the most significant growth coming from Spain, at 57%.

Demand for heavy trucks over 16 tonnes fell slightly by 0.7%, mainly due to significant monthly declines in the UK and France. Registrations of smaller trucks (3.5 tonnes and over) also fell across the EU, by almost 3%.

The bus and coach sector fared better, with demand up by just over 20%, boosted by a 44% increase in the UK.

For the four months from January to April, the EU market expanded by 8.7% to 595,170 units. France was the only major market to record a decline (-0.4%), with Spain (+43.3%), Italy (+14.4%), the UK (+7.1%) and Germany (+6.7%) all posting growth.
