Fiat’s new Ducato promises fuel efficiency and advanced technology 16 May 2014

Fiat has unveiled the new Ducato, the sixth generation of its popular light commercial vehicle (LCV) which has notched up 2.6 million sales since its launch in 1981.

Fuel economy is said to be 10% better across the range, and the Ducato has a six-speed manual transmission as standard, with CO2 emissions from 170g/km for the entry-level 2.3 MultiJet II 110bhp and fuel economy of 44.1mpg on the NEDC cycle.

Both the 2.3-litre MultiJet II 130, which produces 130bhp and 320Nm, and the 2.3-litre MultiJet II 150, with 150bhp and 350 Nm, can be fitted with Start&Stop to boost fuel economy by up to 15%.

The heavy-duty, 3-litre MultiJet Power 180, with 180bhp and 400Nm of torque, has CO2 emissions of 203g/km and 36.7 mpg on the NEDC cycle.

The 2014 edition features new exterior styling which, says Fiat, brings sophisticated 'car design' to the LCV segment. The front end has new headlights with integrated daytime running lights, LED on Tecnico models, and a new grille design.

Headlamps are located on sliding guides and a new single-piece bonnet gives easy access to the engine compartment. Other new features include a new skid plate, body-coloured bumpers and painted door handles, as well as new wheel trim and alloy wheel designs.

Inside the cabin, a new multifunction tablet holder is included, to which a variety of smartphones and tablets can be secured, as well as traditional clipboards and A4 pads.

A double bench seat for passengers is standard, and includes a central backrest that folds down into a table with a document holder clip, and there are storage compartments under the driver and passenger seats.

The new model also includes new systems such as lane departure warning and traffic sign recognition, which identifies speed limits and no-overtaking zones, and displays them on the dashboard.

Eight load volumes are available, ranging from 8 to 17 m³, across four lengths, three wheelbases and three heights, with payloads of between 800 and 2,100kg, as well as three different sizes of side-sliding and rear doors.

In the autumn, a crew cab van will be available, with a full bulkhead and forward-facing seating for seven people.
