First Euro 6 Volvo FH tractor for Arclid’s bulk powder fleet 03 December 2014

A 6x2 new Volvo FH tractor unit, equipped with the lightweight pusher axle, has entered service at specialist bulk powder haulier Arclid Transport.

It is the first Euro 6 Volvo to join the Sandbach, Cheshire-based firm's 26-strong truck fleet, and was specified with the Globetrotter cab.

This is Arclid's second new series FH and general manager David Robinson explains that the firm is also a major user of Volvo Construction Equipment machines, including the new L220H wheeled loader (pictured).

"This machine features Volvo's OptiShift technology, which reduces fuel consumption by up to 18% and increases machine performance," states Robinson.

"We operate a fleet of high quality, high specification trucks and machines and enjoy a very low staff turnover," he says.

Arclid transport manager Peter Conway adds that competitive unladen weight is a key operational requirement and reports that the new FH tares out at 7.9 tonnes 'as delivered'.

He explains that several incremental weight savings have been made by adjustments to the specification.

For example, a fixed fifth wheel has been fitted and there is only one bunk in the sleeper cab. Durabrite aluminium wheels also save weight.

Conway also says that the D13K, 13-litre, 500bhp engine was specified for its durability, as well as torque and power, which he believes will future-proof the truck in the event of a legislated increase in the gross operating weight.

The FH was also specified with Volvo's I-Shift automated gearbox and a higher diff ratio to reflect Arclid's largely motorway running, and hence to save fuel, he says.

The new tractor will remain coupled to one of the Spitzer or Feldbinder tanker trailers operated by Arclid Transport.

Maintenance will be carried out overnight and at weekends by Thomas Hardie Commercials, Middlewich – which also supplied the vehicle – on a Volvo R&M contract.
