First for McMullen as a Volvo joins fleet12 August 2011

Independent Hertfordshire brewers McMullen & Sons Limited have taken delivery of its first Volvo truck. The FL 18-tonne rigid, supplied by Volvo Truck and Bus Centre London, Enfield, is equipped with Volvo's I-Sync automated transmission.

I-Sync, which is aimed primarily at the distribution sector, is proving popular with McMullen & Sons Limited draymen, says the company. In addition to rural and semi-rural work in the south and east of England, deliveries are also made in urban areas including the brewer's pubs in central London.

"We were impressed with a Volvo demonstrator," recalls Leigh Knight, McMullen & Sons' distribution manager. "The Volvo FL with the I-Sync automated gearbox suits our needs ideally. Whether they're down country lanes or in the centre of London, it's in the nature of the deliveries we do that they tend to require a lot of gear changes – which the I-Sync eliminates completely."

Annual mileage is comparatively low at 25,000km a year and the new Volvo FL currently makes around two trips a day with between four and six deliveries each trip.

Deliveries are made by a two-man crew and the truck is equipped with Volvo's Medium length cab which enables the draymen to store their wet weather gear inside.
