First Orion E goes into operation in Edinburgh04 June 2018

National Galleries of Scotland (NGS) has taken delivery of an Orion E electric bus – the first to go into operation in the UK.

Built by Mellor, the fully electric Orion E is operating a shuttle service between NGS’s three sites in Edinburgh.

The 16-seat vehicle has single step entry and a fully flat, low floor saloon, which offers a flexible seating configuration and space for up to four wheelchairs. Passenger access is through either a rapid sliding side entry door or double doors at the rear, and it has a range of 100 miles.

The Orion E’s customisable layout configuration is made possible thanks to its electric front wheel drive system, plus an independent trailing arm suspension which helps to provide a large floor space.

Brian Troddyn, NGS sustainability officer, said: “We’re delighted and proud to have the first bus of this kind in Scotland, specially designed with a low floor for wheelchair access.

“NGS is very committed to promoting green tourism and reducing our carbon emissions is an important part of achieving our goals. We look forward to welcoming visitors on board and being accessible to all.”
