Fleet managers now top table corporate technology leaders: Chevin24 June 2015

New and advancing technologies mean that vehicle fleets are becoming one of most companies’ more advanced assets – putting fleet managers increasingly in the metaphorical driving seat.

So says fleet management systems specialist Chevin, pointing to autonomous vehicles, sophisticated route planning systems and telematics systems, all of which are already changing the game and offering increased efficiencies for fleets and businesses.

"Travel back a generation and the fleet manager was often condescendingly seen ... as a jumped-up mechanic who looked after transport," recalls Chevin managing director Ashley Sowerby.

"However ... in terms of technology, the fleet has gone from being the corporate also-ran to its current status at the cutting edge."

Sowerby also reckons, however, fleet managers are having to work hard to keep abreast of new technology – and that the role is now attracting different kinds of people.

"The best fleet managers we work with are very much aware of the changes taking place, and are grasping the opportunities," states Sowerby.

"A few years ago, this was a job that would not really interest someone from an IT background. Now, that is starting to change," he continues.

"Today, the kind of detailed reporting and overall efficiency gains being achieved mean that many fleet departments are seen as very progressive, and fleet managers are increasingly being given a seat at the top table."
