Flexibility is key to MDF Transport’s choice of semi-trailer 22 May 2013

Great Yarmouth-based MDF Transport has added two Schmitz Cargobull S.CS Mega curtainsider trailers with Varios technology to its fleet of 22 tractor units and 55 trailers.

Mark Farrow, director of MDF Transport, says that the trailers offer all the advantages of a regular curtainsider, combined with a lifting roof, which can be raised on one or both sides for forklift loading, or slid open for crane loading through the roof.

A height-adjustable roof also enables the customer to utilise the maximum vehicle height in Europe – regardless of the tractor fifth wheel height. Hook and loop fasteners on the curtains allowing adjustment for required body heights.

"We could have purchased a platform trailer for the bulk of our work, but having a curtainsider gives us greater flexibility for return loads," comments Farrow.

"Depending on the payload, we can also lower the roof height to minimise aerodynamic drag and optimise fuel efficiency," he adds.

MDF Transport specified the extra strength coil chassis on one of the trailers for its ability to withstand heavy components with small footprint loading – for delivery of oil and gas production equipment.

"We routinely have a requirement to load 20 tonnes over a 2m length for outbound cargo and this trailer can handle it with ease," states Farrow.

"It's rare we ever carry traditional pallets, but if we need to on return journeys, we have the capacity for 34 Euro pallets."
