FlixBus begins trials of all-electric buses on long-distance routes19 March 2018

European bus and coach operator FlixBus is about to trial all-electric buses on two of its long-distance routes, in France and Germany.

In April, the first Flix E-bus will go into operation between Paris and Amiens; this summer, the second vehicle will start on a route between Hessen and Baden-Württemberg.

“Although e-buses are currently much more expensive to buy, we are convinced that this will be a worthwhile investment in the long run, for our company, our customers and the environment,” said André Schwämmlein, founder and CEO of FlixBus.

“As a provider, we are demonstrating that this is a potential turning point in mobility,” he said, adding that the first long-distance e-bus is “a signal to bus manufacturers” to develop alternatives to diesel vehicles.

“The current trend is moving away from private car travel and towards shared mobility options such as buses,” said Schwämmlein. “FlixBus is proud to be a pioneer in helping to propel this change and reliance on transportation with fossil fuels by providing some of the most climate-friendly mobility options in Europe.”

As well expanding its bus network, FlixBus is launching FlixTrain, the first long-distance green train, on 23 March in Germany, and a US operation – FlixBus USA – in California this spring.
