FM Conway goes green on Fuso Canter 7.5 tonne tippers 21 December 2010

Civil engineering and road maintenance contractor FM Conway has selected a fleet of clean, green 7.5-tonne Fuso Canters to work in London's Low Emission Zone.

The Dartford, Kent company has ordered 31 Canter 7C15s trucks to work on its maintenance contracts with borough councils across the capital, and says it chose them for their green credentials and compact dimensions.

Supplied by local Mercedes-Benz dealer Sparshatts of Kent, they are powered by 3.0-litre diesel engines which meet Euro 5 and EEV (enhanced environmentally-friendly vehicle) emissions standards.

The Canters are being fitted with steel tipping bodies by Abba Commercials, of Dover, while the electrically operated hydraulic tipping gear is by Manchester-based Hyva – a new model for the 7.5-tonne gvw market, built with the same sealing technology as Hyva's 26- and 32-tonne tipping gear.

FM Conway plant and transport director Steve Hart likes the 7.5-tonne Canter's high payload capacity – the result of its light ladder-frame chassis – and comments that specifying light-weight bodies and tipping gear means that his Fusos can carry a full half-tonne more than the trucks they are replacing.

"Like anyone operating in central London, we have to make sure the vehicles we run meet the LEZ emissions regulations not just now, but into the future," says Hart. "These Canters represent the state-of-the-art in terms of environmentally-friendly 7.5-tonne truck operation."

And he adds: "Their compact dimensions are an advantage when working in narrow streets and heavy traffic, and the equipment we've fitted has also been carefully chosen for this application."
