Freightliner’s truck innovation gets Hirschmann tech 17 June 2013

Hirschmann Car Communication has developed a film antenna system for Freightliner, to be used on the OEM's next generation of trucks in north America.

Integrated in the body of the tractor unit itself, the system is claimed to save on operational damage, while also improving aerodynamics of the trucks.

"Internalising the antenna eliminates operational damage caused by driving and reduces service and repair costs," states Oliver Neil, vice president of sales and marketing at Hirschmann Car Communication.

"By helping to reduce air resistance, the system also optimises aerodynamics, helping to reduce fuel consumption and making Freightliner's trucks more environmentally friendly."

Traditionally, large trucks in North America employ larger roof antennas, and studies suggest that, on average, 20% of these have to be replaced within a year, due to damage.

Adapted to the available installation space between the structural body panels and the interior lining of the cab, this new system is hidden and enables the vehicle design to be customised.

Work between Hirschmann and Freightliner began in 2009 with the development of a truck prototype known as The Innovation Truck.
