The Freight Transport Association has announced its three category winners for driver of the year, one of whom will be crowned overall driver of the year at the Transport Manager conference in November (29 November; Ricoh Arena, Coventry).

The winner of the 18-tonne competition is Craig Stewart (pictured) of Clarke International, who according to the judges demonstrated outstanding professionalism, knowledge and excellent driving skills.

Twelve finalists took part in six tasks to test their driving style, economical driving, maneuvering, defect checking, knowledge of legislation and risk awareness.

The FTA Van Excellence winner is Steve Mumford of BT Supply Chain, while the 44-tonne category winner is Thomas Kent of Samworth Brothers Supply Chain.

All three winners will be assessed ahead of the FTA driver of the year title being announced in November.

The 18- and 44-tonne categories also recognise the best young drivers: Lee Hawkins of Greggs won the former, with the heavyweight prize going to Reece Cornelius, making it a 44-tonne double for Samworth Brothers.
