FTA president calls for Highway code re-think 24 March 2010

Stewart Oades, president of the Freight Transport Association (FTA) believes that many of the problems on the road are down to poor education, specifically starting with the basics of the Highway Code.

"It's not really been updated to take into account the current volume of HGVs, and we think when someone is learning how to drive they need to understand the consequences of that volume of large vehicles, and also the contact they have with such vehicles," reasons Oades.

"We want [the Code] to be updated because new drivers need to understand complexities about vehicles turning, their visibility, and the operation of heavier vehicles.

"We live in a much more congested environment than a generation ago," continues Oades. "As a result, the highway code, needs more attention and needs to be made more current."
