Fuel drives latest orders from bus operators08 February 2017

Bus operators East Yorkshire Motor Services (EYMS) and Shuttle Buses have updated their fleets, with fuel efficiency topping the list in both cases.

In an investment totalling £3.5 million, EYMS has taken delivery of six Volvo B5TL MCV buses (pictured) for deployment on its Withernsea to Hull route, with 12 more vehicles on order for delivery in September.

“The vehicles have been built to the very latest Euro 6 exhaust emissions requirements and will offer better fuel consumption than the vehicles they have replaced,” says Peter Shipp, owner of EYMS. “Buses on this route regularly run over 50,000 miles each year compared to about 30,000 or less on local urban routes, so the benefits of better fuel consumption will help offset the rise in fuel prices we are seeing again.”

Meanwhile, Ayrshire-based Shuttle Buses has added another Optare Solo to its fleet, bringing the number of Solos it operates in its 40-strong fleet to 16.

The new 9.2m, Cummins Euro 5, Optare Solo with Allison 2100 Transmission will operate the route between Irvine and Stewarton. The new Solo seats up to 30 and is fitted with three-point seat belts.

David Granger, owner of Shuttle Buses, says: “We have operated Optare Solos for many years on both commercial routes and MyBus services subsidised by Strathclyde Partnership for Transport.

“We find that the vehicles are particularly fuel efficient and very good at meeting our requirements for seating capacity, while still being of a size that permits ease of operation in residential urban areas and more remote rural locations.”
